I Forget… Another Reason I Love Amazon

I confess. It’s me! To all of you online retailers out there, specifically Amazon.com, I’m thinking perhaps I should apologize for messing up all your stats on “cart abandonment” for online shopping. But that’s just how I shop online. Especially with Amazon. I’ll put stuff in my cart and I’ll forget about it. Sometimes intentionally, sometimes not.

When I find something I’m thinking of purchasing, rarely will I ever immediately purchase that item. For a couple of reasons:

  1. Do I really want/need this?
  2. Is this the best price I can pay?

One of the things Amazon.com let’s me do is to create “Wishlists” or to just leave things in my shopping cart almost indefinitely. But there’s a benefit to doing this. You see, for all of those items you’re kind of holding onto, Amazon will send you updates if those prices go up or down as you’re holding it. Sometimes I’ll forget what I’m holding onto and will get pleasant little reminders.

I did that with the copy of The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy Extended Edition on Blu-ray boxed set I purchased. I got a great deal on it, a little less than $50 I believe. It was one of the first Blu-ray purchases I made when I got my player a number of months ago.

Do I Have That Already? I Forget…

The problem though is that Lord of the Rings Extended Edition is one of those movies you kind of have to prepare for to watch. It’s not something you just pop in the player on a whim and catch a few scenes. When I watch it, I become engrossed in the movie. We just watched each of the three movies across three nights and I didn’t have my computer out at all while I was watching it. Now, anyone that knows me knows that me not having my computer out for over 10 hours in three days is very odd. But for this reason, I’d forgotten I’d purchased this boxed set at a great price.

Then, a couple of months ago, I got an email from Amazon letting me know it was on sale. It was a great price! (Not quite the same as I’d already paid!) Ooops! Now I have two identical copies of the same movie. Luckily I found some friends that purchased my superfluous copy of the offending trilogy and I didn’t lose any money on the deal. But, I was surprised that Amazon hadn’t reminded me of previously purchasing this movie earlier when I purchased it the 2nd time.

Then, you know what! Recently I noticed the alert message below the next time I looked at this item on Amazon’s website.

Amazon Forgetful Customer Reminder

Had it always been there? Did I miss it? Or, since I’d contacted them about returning the movie, did they flip some sort of “this-guy-is-an-idiot-and-can’t-remember-what-he-bought” switch for my account?

Granted, there are some instances where I’m sure people will purchase multiple, identical items, but this kind of reminder is just another example of some of the little things Amazon does that I love. And, since purchasing my Kindle Fire and joining Amazon Prime, I can tell you that Amazon.com is almost always my first stop now when I think of purchasing something (even groceries and household items now). I’ll be that’s EXACTLY what Bezos and the other Execs were hoping when they were thinking of that Kindle Fire/Amazon Prime relationship.
